The mountains present a list of fun for the entire family no matter what season it is- winter, spring, summer or fall. Pack up and drive up to the mountains for the day, or stay in a cabin for a peaceful weekend getaway. Helen is a perfect choice for the Atlanta family. This small Bavarian town hidden up in the foothill of Blue Ridge mountain is small enough to explore in one weekend but has many things to do that you will be busy for the whole weekend.

Things to Do in Helen, GA:
It’s true that Helen is small. If you sneeze when you drive by the main street you might miss it. But I think it has more to offer for a family looking for a quick getaway that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Summer time is a great time to visit for several outdoor activities. Fall can be fun during the Oktoberfest but get ready to experience traffic jam in this little mountain town. Here are some of fun things to do with kids in Helen.
– River tubing is a fun activity for the whole family. The water is not as extreme so even little kids can enjoy the fun.
– Take a leisure stroll in the main street. It is very small but it has cute character.
– Ride the horse buggy around the block. The kids will enjoy the ride while listen to some fun fact from the driver.
– Hike up the Anna Ruby Fall for a fun outdoor adventure
– Visit Unicoi State Park for a fun day of activities like biking, hiking, paddle boating or just having a picnic by the lake.

Places to Stay in Helen, GA:
There are several hotels in town. But if you want to experience a truly weekend getaway, I would recommend looking for a cabin rental in the surrounding area. We found our rental unit online at Cedar Creek Cabins. The cabin is beautiful and very private. At night, we feel like we are in the middle of the forest. The location is about 10 minutes ride to Helen but with no traffic it’s just a quick ride along the scenic route.
Where to Eat in Helen, GA:
For a little taste of Bavarian, don’t miss Hofer’s Bakery and Cafe – a German bakery in the Alphine village of Helen. You can enjoy the authentic bakery while you wait for the cafe. Be prepare for a long wait during lunch time. But the food is worth the wait.
For a great atmosphere by the river, we enjoy our lunch at Cafe International. The staffs are friendly and attentive. The kids love the view outside with the river nearby. Not to miss is the dessert – Black Forest Cheesecake. But be warned that this dessert is not for children. You will taste the rum and I wouldn’t recommend you to eat and drive. 🙂
