Enter a surreal new world at the High Museum of Art’s Family Fun Day!
Bring the whole family for an afternoon of fun and imagination inspired by the High’s special exhibition Imagining New Worlds. Visit the galleries to view rarely seen works by influential Surrealist Wifredo Lam and responses to his legacy by two contemporary artists, Brooklyn-based José Parlá and Atlanta’s own Fahamu Pecou.
Exploring themes from Africa, Latin America, and Europe, the paintings, sculptures, and sounds will take your family on a trip across the globe – all in your own city! Participate in art-making activities, hear storyteller Mama Koku spin tales of Eshu and other African myths, and dance to the rhythms of Cuba with Latin music duo Havana Son. The family-friendly programming will be sure to spark your child’s imagination!
Want an interactive experience to learn more about the artists? Join a docent-guided Family Tour for an adventure through the galleries. Tours begin in the Greene Family Learning Gallery at 2 p.m. If you prefer a self-guided stroll through Imagining New Worlds, just pick up a free bilingual Family Guide at the entrance of the exhibition and explore at your own pace!
Activities will continue throughout the afternoon. Drop in anytime from 1 to 4 p.m. to craft an art project! Kids will make their own imaginary animals inspired by the figures in Lam’s paintings and experiment with shapes to create surreal works they can take home with them. Hear Havana Son’s performance at 2 p.m. and Mama Koku’s readings at 1:30 and 3 p.m.
This event is FREE with Museum admission. Tickets are available at high.org.
